Los Nietos, Spain, is a small fishing village with its own marina on the Mar Menor. It began as a small fishing settlement and was later urbanized to accommodate more holiday homes on the Mar Menor.[1] It is now a bustling community with many visitors, especially in the summer, and hosts occasional events. There are many foreigners living there, mainly British. The town is located at the eastern end of the Cartagena-Los Nietos commuter rail line.
The Mar Menor has a 73 km coastline with numerous beaches boasting crystal-clear, shallow waters (maximum depth of 7 m). The Mar Menor lagoon covers an area of 170 km² and is the largest saltwater lake in Europe. The average annual temperature is 17 °C, with mild winters and average temperatures rarely dropping below 10 °C.
La Manga del Mar Menor is a narrow strip of land between two seas, the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor, up to 300 m wide and 21 km long. It features over 40 km of sandy beaches, a casino, hotels, and is close to the airport, the city center of Murcia, and Cartagena, one of Spain's oldest cities. Los Alcázares is a former fishing village of 20 km² with 7 km of beaches stretching from Los Narejos to Punta Brava. It has good transport links with Los Alcázares and other nearby places.
Santiago de la Ribera was founded in 1888 around a hermitage named after the apostle James, and was founded by Friar José María Barnuevo Rodrigo de Villamayor, a knight of the Military Order of Santiago; hence its name, Santiago de la Ribera (Saint James of the Riverbank).
Cabo de Palos is a bay on the Mediterranean side of La Manga, just before the strip of land itself. The town is built on a volcanic column of the Murcian coast, where fishing remains one of the main sources of income, although it has modernized.
Playa Honda, Mar de Cristal, Islas Menores, Los Nietos, Los Urrutias, and Punta Brava are small villages and towns along the coastline.
Murcia and Alicante airports are about 35 minutes and one hour away respectively.
